Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally, Inc., Donates $75,000 to Sturgis-Area Charities After Lengthy Lawsuit

1smriSturgis® Motorcycle Rally, Inc. (SMRi), official stewards of the Sturgis® brand, have announced that they have donated $50,000 to Sturgis® Rally Charities Foundation, $20,000 to the Sturgis® Rally Community Development Fund and $5,000 to Sturgis Community Preschool for 2015. The monies donated to Sturgis® Rally Charities Foundation will in turn be distributed to local charities in and around the Sturgis and Black Hills community. This is the fifth year in a row SMRi has made such a contribution, all of which have been made possible by community-supported official licensing agreements that SMRi manages for the Sturgis® brands. These donations come in the wake of SMRi’s overwhelming victory in court against Rushmore Photo and Gifts and WalMart over illegal sales of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® counterfeit-themed goods.

2smri“We’re just happy the legal ordeal is behind us and that the jury validated the legitimacy of our organization’s stewardship of the Sturgis brand, as it relates to the motorcycle rally,” said Dean Kinney, SMRi chairperson. “SMRi is good for the local community and the people who live in it.” In keeping with its stated mission to “maximize the value of the intellectual property of the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM) on behalf of the greater Sturgis area,” SMRi donates each year to Sturgis® Rally Charities Foundation, who dispersed funds Thursday December, 17th at the Sturgis VFW to dozens of local charities that have come to depend on revenues generated by SMRi licensing. Causes helped include Sturgis elementary school after-school programs and PTA, the Sturgis volunteer fire department, Sturgis public library, Sturgis Area Arts Council, Sturgis Alliance of Churches, and many many more.

3smriSturgis® Motorcycle Rally, Inc., a South Dakota non-profit corporation, got official endorsements from The City of Sturgis City Council and the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce. Hundreds of retailers carry Officially Licensed Sturgis® Products every year, and, through royalties generated from those sales, SMRi is able to donate funds to benefit the local Sturgis community.

“…mission to maximize the value of the intellectual property of the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally(TM)…”

Sounds sort-a like what the peasants did when they killed “the Goose that lied the Golden Eggs.”

They “maximized the value of the Goose”…… at that point in time.
But destroyed the Goose’s legacy for ever after……..
    Very, VERY short sighted.

More shameless propaganda. The community of Sturgis gets $50,000 but what were the gross earnings of all SMRI businesses? 10 million? 20 million? More? SMRI dulls out pennies to the local community in order to create the perception that they are the “Stewards of the Sturgis brand” while lining their pockets with tens of millions of dollars at the expense of local and rally businesses. That’s the bottom line people. And there’s nothing an artfully crafted press release full of lies can do to say otherwise. Shame on Den Kinney and his associates. You are no stewards of Sturgis, the brand or the rally.

I have to wonder how dumb the citizens of Sturgis can be. Jerry, owner of Hot Leathers is making millions of dollars in profit off rally product sales each year. In the trial it came out that he sold 16.5 million dollars of Sturgis goods from 2011 to 2014. In 2015, the 75th he sold around 8 million dollars of goods. He is using SMRI to sue his competition. Sure he’s a “volunteer” board member working without pay. What a total joke!

Dean Kinney just paid 15 million dollars for a group of radio stations in Rapid City.

Hope the people of Sturgis enjoy the crumbs they get from the crooks!

Manipulating the locals, SMRI succeeds. Manipulating the motorcycle world. SMRI fails again and again.

This sounds like the California Lottery.. Supposted to go to the school system, but what it really does is save the government monies. The winnings and earnings is swapped out of monies all ready set aside for California. So it means less that the government has to pay.. way to invest in the future..

I have had 2 bad experiences dealing with people associated with the rally and have never been there
There needs to be a boycott of that whole ordeal for a couple of years

All of you said it!! They are theifs, who buys a non profit?? They should have to publish the gross sales every year. But the people of sturgis were lied to and did not have a good lawyer representing them.
