Motorcycle lane-splitting — the rush-hour time saver for bikers that enrages many drivers is close to be formally legalized. Assembly Bill 51 has been passed and would authorize a motorcycle to be driven between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane if the motorcycle is not driven at a speed of more than 50 miles per hour and is driven no more than 15 miles per hour faster than the speed of traffic. The bill, still to be approved and signed by the California Senate and Governor would provide that these provisions do not authorize a motorcycle to be driven in contravention of other laws relating to the safe operation of a vehicle. California would be the first state to sanction the traffic-evading tactic, already widespread on traffic-choked freeways of Los Angeles. If definitively approved, the American Motorcycle Association (AMA), hopes that the new California law will inspire legislators in other states. New law Legalizes Three-Wheel Polaris Slingshot In Texas. Polaris Slingshot ended up in legal limbo last year after it was determined that it didn’t fit the letter of any of Texas motor vehicle laws. It didn’t have the safety equipment required to define it as a car, but since it had seats, and not a saddle, it couldn’t be considered a motorcycle, either. That changed last week when Governor Greg Abbot signed an amendment to the law that essentially removed the saddle requirement, allowing three-wheel “autocycles” to be registered as motorcycles, as they are in many states. A motorcycle license is still required to drive one, but you can take the test in a three-wheeler if you only plan to drive that type of vehicle. The $19,999 two-seater is powered by a front-mounted four-cylinder car engine that drives the single rear wheel through a five-speed, belt-drive transmission. It has three-point seat belts, roll hoops, power steering and stability control, but no airbags or windshield wipers. The laws that govern vehicles like the Slingshot vary from state to state, and it’s still not street legal in a few. That includes Connecticut, Hawaii and Maryland, while Indiana recently passed its own “autocycle” law authorizing its use. In most states it follows the same helmet rules as a motorcycle, but in California can be driven without one and only requires an automobile license to operate.

Motorcycle brands in India such as Harley and Triumph have already adopted the localisation and CKD routes, thus reducing the price of motorcycles. “We hope to start CKD and local assembly in the next three-to five years. If things move in the right direction, then we may advance our plans. We are currently studying the market and our competition,” said Pankaj Dubey, managing director Polaris India.

Petitions To Move Myrtle Beach Atlantic Bikefest Out Of The Grand Stand And Maybe Out Of South Carolina. This year traffic patterns and barricades seem to have created problems and prevented many to easily access the beach. There are other petitions to move the event to North Carolina. There are 2 Harley-Davidson events. One already moved to North Carolina, the other moved south of Myrtle Beach to the Murrells Inlet Garden City.     The Slingshot is a distant relative to the great Morgan 3 Wheeler 20 generations removed. It ain’t a motorcycle. It ain’t a automobile so they had to invent a new class of vehicle that doesn’t meet either the auto or motorcycle safety requirements . In California No helmet, or motorcycle endorsement is required. The questains is, can one take a drivers test in a Slingshot for a normal license in CA?

    Who cares? I do, because when we get more of these on the road there’s going to be a bunch of them going “splat” just like existing vehicles but with a difference-they are clearly an attempt to build a non-bike that skirts the strangling array of auto safety regulations. These things are going to be a lightning rod for Nader-types who will look for a “solution” to our freedom just as Nader “protected” us from the Chevy Corvair. I can easily see the usual overshoot when the regulations start pouring in, and we could see all trikes banned. We who own motorcycles get a pass from road safety regulations because there’s too much money and numbers of riders for anyone to realistically come after us. The original Morgan was itself, just a way of dodging heavy 4-wheeler taxes. These “modern Morgans” have the same mentality and may hurt a lot of other types of trikes as collateral damage. Do they look like fun? Hell yeah, but I don’t like where this may end up.

    “Do they look like fun? Hell yeah, but I don’t like where this will end up”. Ok, so let’s ban them. While we’re at it let’s ban sport bikes ’cause they go splat too. Shoot, lots of guys get hurt on dirt bikes, better ban them too. Let’s protect our freedom by insisting nobody else can exercise theirs. I don’t like where THIS may end up. Maybe we should protect our freedom by embracing everyone else’s. Does the Slingshot, an Elio, or a Morgan skirt federal regulations? If so I say that’s a good thing. Try and regulate my freedom and I’ll find a way to skirt your regs and in the process collect more brothers unified to defeat you in the next election. That’s the way it should be. Problem is too many bikers look for a reason to divide instead of unite. Ride an import or a Victory? Don’t have tats and a scruffy beard? Don’t wear a black leather vest with the right patches? Then you’re not a real biker. Ride something with three wheels? That’s not a real motorcycle. Divide divide divide. United we stand and???

    How about lets protect our freedom by “staying out of everyone elses’ business. ”
    Look, “embracing” is a cat herding exercise, that can be accomplished only through slavery.

    But you missed this point.

    Sure, these things are a one way to skirt “the man.”
    But that, in an of itself has never been the point of such exercise.

    Three wheelers, like V8 bikes and powered bar-stools have historically been garage projects, undertaken for the sheer fun of building them. The only reason they turn into products is because they “look” like they’d be “fun to own”….

    But in reality the fun and point was in the building…. where as the reality of purchasing and using one becomes increasingly marginal in the absence of the original point.

    @ TJBob 😉 Using a slingshot to break windows is fun also. Instead of putting words in my mouth about banning things, maybe just chill and actually try and absorb and comment on what I wrote? “We who own motorcycles get a pass from road safety regulations because there’s too much money and numbers of riders for anyone to realistically come after us” obviously addressed your sportbikes going splat jab, and dirtbikes have nothing to do with whether these 3 wheel somethings are/should be street legal or if they’ll hurt trikes legality eventually. Likewise the whole “but they’re fun” straw man. Of course they’re fun, and I never said they weren’t, nor called for banning anything. All I attempted was to point out a potential problem with these vehicles, and express concern for backlash that could hurt the existing trike category. I would never ask you to agree with me, but if you’re going to respond to a post, maybe actually respond to the post?
