Harley-Davidson Recalls 19,000 Softail And Dyna Models Model-Year 2012 For Front Brake Issue

12_FLS_C1In the affected motorcycles, the threads for the brake line banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder may corrode. If the threads corrode, a sudden loss of brake fluid could result, causing a loss of the front brakes, and increasing the risk of a crash.

The models affected were manufactured from August 22, 2011, through February 24, 2012. The recall is for: 2012 FXST103, FLSTC, FLSTC103, FLSTF, FLSTF103, FXDL, FXDWG, FXDWG103, FXDC, FXDB, FLSTN, FLSTN103, FLSTC103Shrine, FLSTFB, FLSTFB103, FXS, FXS103, FLS, FLS103, FLD, FLD103, FXDF, and FXDF103 Dyna and Softail motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will flush and inspect the front brake master cylinder and, if necessary, replace the master cylinder, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 14, 2015. Owners may Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0163 and 0164.

I don’t recall Harley having to announce so many recalls. What’s going on?

  4. 4 TJ Martin Dec 31st, 2014 at 12:50 pm

    PH – What is going on is a rampant epidemic of recalls across the automotive and M/C world mostly due to the fact that too many complicated , critical and important parts are being out sourced to factories and countries where the workers are so under trained and the standards of education so low that the unfortunately assembly line worker is completely unaware what the part he/she is assembling even goes on … never mind how/why it works or what might constitute a flaw along the way …….and the sad fact is …. its only gonna get worse across the board … with as the bard Jim Morrison so well said ;

” No one here gets out alive ”

My final post for 2014 as well as onsite in general . Its been fun … Kudos to Cyril for the site … but its time to move on

Happy New Year … and may it be a damn sight better than 2014 was 😉

Recalls are cheap when you don’t actually do the correction. I still have not been able to get the fix for my 2011 FLT brakes. “Don’t have the parts… Blah, blah, blah.”

And thanks again to Cyril for the blog.

    Happy New Year everyone.

    TJ Martin,

Good post – indeed, ‘AMERICAN’ should actually mean MADE in America, as opposed to foreign parts, partly assembled in the USA, with the accountants, lawyers and MBA students mostly from America, with the H.O. address in the USA…

Eg – if I buy an HD in Taiwan, it has to be imported from the USA, yet there are actually more parts on that very same motorcycle, made just down the road from where I live in Taiwan (just an arbitrary example).

There has to be pressure on US lawmakers to enforce US OEM’s to publish per product/item, the percentage of each final product that is made in the USA, by the number of parts in the items and the number of those parts 100% made in the USA. Or at least a publication of xx% of parts MADE IN THE USA.

That said: the USA have largely only itself to blame, as long as the country is governed by unions and mad wage demands, little will change.

In the last few years Harley has put a lot of development and innovation into their products, but they also laid off a lot of full time workers and replaced them with temps. So less trained less skilled workers assembling more complex and complicated machines. I don’t know what the exct answer is but I don’t think busting the unions and replacing every worker with a minimum wage temp is it.

I wonder where the defective parts are made, and how many actual failures occurred.
Otherwise I guess it’s a metallurgy issue causing a leak, or the end of Western civilization.

    Complex and complicated? Innovative ?

HD ” lineage” at its best for complacent buyers .

No one to blame other than the buyers who vote with their money wherever its made.

Yes fuji, innovative and complex. Just so you know, I ride Victory because I found Harley lacking. They’re ok bikes but did not impress me as a rider. But if I’m going to rip on ’em for what they do wrong it’s only fair for me to give them credit for what they do right. Compare today’s H-D’s with the same model from 15 years ago and today is a much better bike. They’ve done a very good job of taking something that has their bread and butter traditional look and feel, but with better frames, better engine electronics, better brakes, better forks. They’ve made improvements to the wind management, the lighting, the stereos, etc. All kinds of stuff that would benefit from a higher trained and skilled workforce to prevent mistakes or problems on assembly.

Hey Bob, Now if only H-D could make a BETTER motor, like S&S Big Twins, S&S Wedge, Polaris Indian Chief & Scout motors ! That POS Twinky, is crap, I’ll keep my 2 EVO’S, FOREVER !

  12. 12 Jim Mar 25th, 2015 at 8:15 pm

So here comes a recall….strange that threads get rusted and leak….but then again….I hate to bring my bike in for any kind of work….the people who work on your bike do more damage….cheap labor and whipping does not help….. either way…. the recall is free….so what to hell….just hope when its done and over the problem is not worse….Ouch!
